Element-Selective Magnetic Imaging in Exchange-Coupled Systems by Magnetic Photoemission Microscopy

1998

We have used a photoemission microscope to obtain element-resolved magnetic contrast in stacked magnetic thin film systems. Magnetic information is thereby provided by X-ray magnetic circular dichroism. Elemental sensitivity, which is crucial for studying magnetic coupling phenomena in systems with several different layers, is achieved by tuning the energy of the illuminating photons to atomic absorption edges. We present measurements of a Ni-coated Co micropattern on Cu(001), and a wedged Co/Cr/Fe(001) sample. In the former sample the Ni magnetization is seen to follow the magnetization of the Co pattern, thereby changing from an out-of-plane easy axis in areas without underlying Co to in…

Magneto-Structural Properties and Theoretical Studies of a Family of Simple Heterodinuclear Phenoxide/Alkoxide Bridged MnIIILnIII Complexes : On the …

2018

A family of MnIIILnIII strictly dinuclear complexes of general formula [MnIII(μ-L)(μ-OMe)(NO3)LnIII(NO3)2(MeOH)] (LnIII = Gd, Dy, Er, Ho) has been assembled in a one pot synthesis from a polydentate, multipocket aminobis(phenol)ligand [6,6'-{(2-(1-morpholyl)ethylazanediyl)bis(methylene)}bis(2-methoxy-4-methylphenol)], Mn(NO3)2·4H2O, Ln(NO3)3· nH2O, and NEt3 in MeOH. These compounds represent the first examples of fully structurally and magnetically characterized dinuclear MnIIILnIII complexes. Single X-ray diffraction studies reveal that all complexes are isostructural, consisting of neutral dinuclear molecules where the MnIII and LnIII metal ions, which exhibit distorted octahedral MnN2O4 …

Magnetic and structural study of (Fe1−Co )62 Nb8B30 bulk amorphous alloys

2004

Abstract The electric and magnetic properties of rapidly quenched (Fe 1− x Co x ) 62 Nb 8 B 30 bulk metallic glasses were studied with x =0, 0.33 and 0.50. The Curie temperature in the amorphous state was found to be about 245 °C for the Co-free alloy, 290 °C for x =0.33 and 201 °C for x =0.50, while the crystallization temperature is varying within 15° only around 600 °C. The change in T C correlates with the change in Mossbauer parameters. An interesting flattening effect of annealing on the hysteresis loop was observed which increases with the Co content. The resistivity could not be improved above 152 μΩ cm, which limits the high frequency applications of these alloys.

Early silent microstructural degeneration and atrophy of the thalamocortical network in multiple sclerosis

2016

Recent studies on patients with clinically isolated syndrome (CIS) and multiple sclerosis (MS) demonstrated thalamic atrophy. Here we addressed the following question: Is early thalamic atrophy in patients with CIS and relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS) mainly a direct consequence of white matter (WM) lesions-as frequently claimed-or is the atrophy stronger correlated to "silent" (nonlesional) microstructural thalamic alterations? One-hundred and ten patients with RRMS, 12 with CIS, and 30 healthy controls were admitted to 3 T magnetic resonance imaging. Fractional anisotropy (FA) was computed from diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) to assess thalamic and WM microstructure. The relative thalamic vol…

Custom coordination environments for lanthanoids: tripodal ligands achieve near-perfect octahedral coordination for two dysprosium-based molecular na…

2017

Controlling the coordination sphere of lanthanoid complexes is a challenging critical step toward controlling their relaxation properties. Here we present the synthesis of hexacoordinated dysprosium single-molecule magnets, where tripodal ligands achieve a near-perfect octahedral coordination. We perform a complete experimental and theoretical investigation of their magnetic properties, including a full single-crystal magnetic anisotropy analysis. The combination of electrostatic and crystal-field computational tools (SIMPRE and CONDON codes) allows us to explain the static behavior of these systems in detail. Giant magnetic anisotropy energy and coercivity in Fe island and atomic wire on W(110)

2012

We have directly investigated the giant magnetic anisotropy energy and coercivity of monolayer (ML) Fe islands and stripes on flat and stepped W(110) surfaces using x-ray magnetic circular dichroism. Both for islands and stripes, the magnetic anisotropy energy is $\ensuremath{\sim}$1.0 meV/atom, independent of the coverage below 0.5 ML. On the contrary, the coercive field of the islands rapidly drops from 4.3 T at 0.25 ML to 1.9 T at 0.50 ML, while that of the stripes moderately degrades from 3.5 T at 0.15 ML ($\ensuremath{\sim}$3 atom rows) to 3.0 T at 0.50 ML. We explain the contrastive behavior for the islands and stripes by different nucleation and remagnetization processes. Considering…

Discoidin domain receptor 1 gene variants are associated with decreased white matter fractional anisotropy and decreased processing speed in schizoph…

2019

Abstract DDR1 has been linked to schizophrenia (SZ) and myelination. Here, we tested whether DDR1 variants in people at risk for SZ influence white matter (WM) structural variations and cognitive processing speed (PS). First, following a case-control design (Study 1), SZ patients (N = 1193) and controls (N = 1839) were genotyped for rs1264323 and rs2267641 at DDR1, and the frequencies were compared. We replicated the association between DDR1 and SZ (rs1264323, adjusted P = 0.015). Carriers of the rs1264323AA combined with the rs2267641AC or CC genotype are at risk to develop SZ compared to the other genotype combinations. Second, SZ patients (Study 2, N = 194) underwent an evaluation of PS …

Broad disruption of brain white matter microstructure and relationship with neuropsychological performance in male patients with severe alcohol depen…

2012

Aims In the last years, refined magnetic resonance diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) methods have become available to study microstructural alterations in the human brain. We investigated to what extent white matter tissue abnormalities are present in male patients after chronic, excessive alcohol consumption and if these alterations are correlated with measures of alcohol consumption and neuropsychological performance. Methods Twenty-four detoxified adult male patients with severe alcohol dependence and 23 healthy male control subjects were included in the study. Neuropsychological tests were assessed for executive function, attention, memory and visuospatial function. DTI was acquired and pr…

An Autonomous System to Take Angular Thermal-Infrared Measurements for Validating Satellite Products

2015

An autonomous system for field land surface temperature (LST) measurements taken at different observation angles was developed to be deployed easily at any conventional meteorological tower station. The system permits ground-truth data to be acquired on a continuous basis, and angularly scans land and sky hemispheres with a single thermal-infrared (TIR) radiometer. This paper describes the autonomous angular system and the methodology to assess ground-truth LST and relative-to-nadir emissivity data from system measurements. Ground-truth LSTs were used to validate satellite-retrieved LST products at two experimental sites (rice crop and shrubland areas). The relative-to-nadir emissivity valu…
